Ohio U condemns anti-Semetic graffiti found on campus

Ohio University leadership released a statement Monday afternoon condemning anti-Semitism, after an anti-Semitic symbol was painted on the campus graffiti wall on Richland Avenue.
A swastika was painted on top of a Black Lives Matter mural featuring George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, whose recent murders sparked nationwide protests.
“Anti-Semitism is not tolerated on our campuses and does not reflect our strong commitment to diversity and inclusion,” the Ohio U press release stated. “We condemn anti-Semitism and all bigotry as a direct contradiction to our values.”
The university acknowledged that it does not “shield its community” from free speech, but emphasized treating others with compassion.
“Although our commitment to freedom of expression means that the university does not shield its community from speech even when it is offensive and disturbing, as in this case, as Bobcats, it is our responsibility to care for and treat each other with compassion and dignity,” the press release continued.
The university also reaffirmed its commitment to creating a “safe, welcoming and inclusive” educational environment and workplace, as well as celebrating diversity and inclusion.The mural was defaced over the weekend, but the symbol was later covered.
