More than 100 students gathered on West Green on Monday afternoon to mourn an Ohio University student who died over the weekend in Wilson Hall.

Students who attended the vigil placed bouquets of flowers on a memorial and wrote brief messages on poster board about Jordyn Airy, a first-year University College student from Dublin, Ohio, who died on campus Saturday. Airy’s memorial featured another poster board bearing a phrase she often said to friends when encountering small inconveniences in life.

Neither the Ohio University Police Department nor the Athens County Coroner have disclosed the cause of Airy’s death.

The vigil was organized by Kat Campbell, Airy’s childhood friend, to honor Airy’s life.

“It’s better to get together and talk about it and not just ignore it — not just be silent about it — because it happened, and we need to cope with it somehow,” Campbell said.
