Athens City Police Department made multiple arrests for several crimes during the first two weeks of the school year, including theft, assault and underage intoxication.

Police charged one student with assault of a police horse, due to the student slapping the back of the horse in full view of officers. The incident went viral on social media, with a now-deleted video of the horse assault being retweeted by the Ohio University branch of Barstool, a prominent sports blog.

Touching police horses without first receiving permission from an officer is considered a crime in Athens.
