OU College Democrats come out on top in voter registration contest

The Ohio University chapter of College Democrats registered more voters for the primaries than any other chapter in the state, winning a competition overseen by the Ohio Democratic party last month.OU College Democrats won the contest by earning the most points out of any participating school, including the Ohio State University, University of Toledo and Miami University.“We went out every day, and we pushed to have the most voter registration and the most ‘Get Out to Vote Cards’ across campus,” Andy Price, the Communications Director of the OU College Democrats, said. One of the ways the group managed to gather so many registrations was by doing ‘dorm storms.’ A dorm storm is when members of the group meet with the residents of each residence hall and see if they want to register to vote or fill out a ‘commit to vote’ card.College Democrats visited multiple residence halls and spent time on Morton Hill, Jeff Hill and at the bottom of Baker University Center. Even though the deadline for registration has passed, the group can still be found at the bottom of Baker handing out ‘commit to vote’ cards. “I am so happy,” Price said. “This just shows how motivated we are and how closely connected we are that we can work together to do this.”The group will receive a prize from the Ohio Democratic Party for winning the competition, although that prize is yet to be determined, Price said. Now that the contest has passed, College Democrats are making sure they fill the polls with as many voters as possible.“Whether you are a Bernie supporter, a Hillary supporter or if you’re a Republican, we want you to vote,” Price said.Correction: Incorrect numbers of registered voters were removed from this story.
