HAPCAP Undertakes Program to Provide Transport for Those in Need

The Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Program (HAPCAP) is undertaking a new pilot transportation program to help those in need. The community outreach organization, also known as Community Action, will provide cheap transportation to a select group of individuals starting Nov. 7.Individuals with disabilities and the elderly are the target group of the program. Area residents in need of transportation will be able to contact HAPCAP at least 24 hours ahead of time in order to schedule a pick up and drop off from medical or social services appointments.If all goes well with the pilot program, organizers hope to offer their affordable services to low income individuals as well.At-Large Representative Elahu Gosney made sure to note the intended group of people this project was directed toward during the most recent city council meeting.“Again, this is a private program, primarily for those with disabilities. But also if space permits, it will be available for elderly and low income residents of Athens county as well,” said Gosney.Cliff Warren, the Transit Supervisor for HAPCAP, is busy preparing for the beginning of the project, and excited about providing a new opportunity for area residents.“We look for it to grow,” said Warren. “The need is out there. If we can get one person to the doctor, that would be a good thing.”Warren also plans on making sure information is more readily available to the public once things become more organized and explained HAPCAP will inform public officials with the necessary information to put out to the public.Those interested in utilizing this system, should consider the following information:- There is one handicap-accessible van and one regular van.- Rides must be registered 24 hours ahead of time with HAPCAP.- Earliest pick-up is at 8:00 a.m. and latest drop off is at 9:00 p.m.- The transportation service will be open Monday through Saturday.- You can call anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday though Friday.- One-way trips cost two dollars.- HAPCAP plan to release more information within the following days.For additional information, call HAPCAP/Community Action at (740) 767-4500.
