Opinion: Trump surge in polls is scary
Will someone queue the song “Bad Day” by Daniel Powter, please? Because we are living in a reality show.RealClearPolitics reports that new polls from the Los Angeles Times and CNN show the Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump polling ahead of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. To be fair, Clinton is ahead in eight other polls. That’s good, right?Ouch...choosing between Clinton and Trump, we don’t win either way here. However, Trump has been picking up recently, and as CNN reports, Trump is gaining light in two familiar battleground states: Ohio and Florida. Jennifer Agiesta of CNN reports:
“Among likely voters in Ohio, Trump stands at 46% to Clinton's 41%, with 8% behind Libertarian Gary Johnson and 2% behind Green Party nominee Jill Stein. In Florida, likely voters split 47% for Trump to 44% for Clinton, within the poll's 3.5 percentage point margin of error, and with 6% behind Johnson and 1% backing Stein.”
Do I have your attention? Good.Ohio and Florida have been vital over the past several years in choosing presidents. In fact, in the last 10 elections, Ohio has batted 1.000 when it came to choosing the president. Florida has voted for the nominee in nine of the last 10 elections. Maybe Floridians were just too excited to see the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics, and they overlooked politics? I would want to see snow, too. This is a scary time to be an American. Both of our candidates are beyond questionable, but at the end of the day, we could elect someone like Trump who will get the nuclear codes. The joke should be over by now. It stopped being funny once he was nominated. Trump could actually win this thing. The Ohio University College Republicans even endorsed Trump two weeks ago. I was wondering how long it would take the organization to endorse such an odd candidate. It is always easier to back someone who is leading.Trump seems to have a new strategy. The Republican nominee seems to be using medical information to give himself an edge over Clinton. Clinton recently was shown fainting entering a van escorted by the U.S. Secret Service. Following the incident, the Trump campaign released the candidate’s medical records. However, Trump did not just stop at medical records; he released his testosterone levels on the Dr. Oz Show on Thursday. Talk about T.M.I. We as Americans will not see his tax returns, but we know his testosterone levels … lovely. The reality show of our time is coming to a close. Both options are terrible in my eyes and in the eyes of many. According to RealClearPolitics, Trump’s favorability is at 38.4 percent. He is a villain, but he is winning. It’s a catch-22, but Trump is scary, and the fact that his money has taken him this far shows our values as a nation. Donald Trump may have been a joke to many, but polls show he could really win the presidency.
