Who he is and how it happened: Trump’s alleged second would-be assassin
On Sept. 15, a man identified as Ryan Wesley Routh was arrested after allegedly pointing a rifle-styled firearm from around 500 yards away at former President Donald Trump, which the FBI is investigating as an attempted assassination.
Trump, who was unharmed, was playing a round of golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida when a Secret Service agent spotted the barrel of Routh’s rifle poking through a fence and engaged, according to News Nation.
Routh fled the scene and was later pulled over about an hour away by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, according to CNN.
Watch local authorities apprehend Routh here:
Local authorities found two backpacks, a GoPro and the firearm Routh used close to the bushes that the Secret Service saw him run away from, News Nation reported.
While in court the following day, Routh was charged with possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with a removed serial number. Authorities close to the situation believe more charges could be added, according to CNN.
The charging documents showed that Routh openly disagreed with Trump on social media and his cell phone data showed he was in the area of the attempted assassination for almost 12 hours prior to the Secret Service spotting him.
