Out-of-state Ohio U students eligible for vaccine in phase 2D

Students at Ohio U who are not Ohio residents will still be eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine starting Monday as Ohio moves into phase 2D of its statewide vaccine distribution plan.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced three new vaccine distribution phases in a press conference on March 16 as more vaccines became available in Ohio.

Phases 1E and 2C both began March 19, where Ohioans with certain medical conditions and those over the age of 40 became eligible for the vaccine. Phase 2D opens vaccines to all Ohioans 16 and up, starting March 29.

“We’ve had every indication from the federal government and the Biden administration that we will see a rather significant increase for the week of March 29,” DeWine said.

Ohioans ages 16 and 17 will only be able to get the Pfizer vaccine, while those 18 and older will be eligible to receive the Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

Some out-of-state students initially feared they would be unable to get the vaccine because they are not Ohio residents.

“I was excited that vaccines were opening up, but I became worried that because I live in Virginia, I wouldn’t actually be able to get one,” Ohio U freshman Colleen McGuire said.

A spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Health, however, confirmed non-Ohio residents’ eligibility.

“All they will need is a form of identification that lists their name and date of birth. No proof of citizenship or Ohio residency will be required,” the spokesperson said.
