The Athens County Democratic Party’s Central Committee appointed Ben Ziff to fill former Councilmember Peter Kotses’s vacant seat on Athens City Council on Wednesday evening.

Kotses resigned from his seat last week after announcing he would not seek re-election

Ziff is also running for an at-large position on City Council. He will be on the ballot for the primary election May 4.

Ziff, who has lived in Athens since 1997, is a former Ohio University student who has worked as a barista and manager at Donkey Coffee and as a paramedic in Columbus and Zanesville.

The committee unanimously confirmed Ziff. He will be seated once the Ohio Secretary of State’s office approves the appointment.
