Student Senate discusses Halloween weekend with an emphasis on safety, inclusion, and responsibility
On Wednesday, Ohio University’s Student Senate meeting opened with Dr. Scott Bye, representing the Office of Community Standards and Student Responsibility, succeeded by Staff Lieutenant Tim Ryan of the OUPD, sharing expectations regarding conduct and safety in preparation for Ohio University’s upcoming Halloween weekend.
Dr. Bye opened by highlighting the significance of the university’s sanctions for alcohol violations and noting that students who receive such violations are at risk for suspension. He also emphasized the importance of responsibility and well-being, encouraging students to arrive at social gatherings with trusted friends and to keep their cell phones with them.
Staff Lt. Tim Ryan followed by indicating an increased police presence throughout the weekend. He then persuaded students to have a plan when going out, staying with friends they trust, and to be an active bystander to increase general safety. He later encouraged the community, if you “see something, say something.”
The floor was then opened to questions from the audience and senators. Members of the audience asked whether or not there would be an increased medical presence beyond the established police presence. Lieutenant Ryan followed by confirming that there would be a dramatic increase in medical staff.
At the conclusion of the presentation, the Senate voted on Resolution 2324-36 for a purchase of 14 pizzas from Little Caesars to help boost engagement for the upcoming Issue 1 debate on Oct. 30, Resolution 2324-37 for a purchase of 30 to 50 fresh pumpkin pies and Insomnia Cookies for a Halloween event involving minority students, and Resolution 2324-38 for the purchase of polo shirts for current and incoming Senate members. This resolution would provide members with business casual attire to wear while portraying professionalism without making socioeconomic status a barrier for students hoping to join the Senate. All of the resolutions passed unanimously.
Before adjournment, the Senate heard commission and committee reports. Treasurer Reagan Farmer presented the Senate’s budget stating that the total budget for the Senate is $37,189.36. Money allocated but not spent totals $7,507.90, and money not allocated nor spent totals $29,616.40.
Dean of Students Kathy Fahl concluded by saying that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and reminded students to wear purple on October 20th and to attend the Survivor Speak Out on October 24th to raise awareness for domestic abuse and violence.
