Athenians hold vigil for Ginsburg outside courthouse
Several dozen people stood vigil for the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Court Street during a somber Saturday evening.
Ginsburg, known for her work toward gender equality throughout both her career as a lawyer and as an associate justice in the U.S. Supreme Court, passed away at her home in Washington, D.C. on Friday. She was 87.
She was the second woman in U.S. history to serve on the court.
Some attendees held candles, shining as daylight waned against the increasingly dark courthouse steps. Others held signs that called onlookers to action, to carry on the justice’s legacy. Another featured a quote from Ginsburg herself.
“Women belong in all places where decisions are being made,” Ginsburg once said.
