Graduate Student Senate votes to amend its constitution

Graduate Student Senate met Tuesday night in Walter Hall to amend its constitution so the Board of Trustees is no longer required to approve future amendments to the body’s governing document.

The amendment —co-sponsored by President Dareen Tadros, Vice President Samantha Stewart and Treasurer Michael Senteney —passed unanimously. 

However, the amendment was not the cause of most of the discussion. Rather, the discourse centered on amendments passed last year that have not been approved by the Board of Trustees, which caused concern among several members of the body.

A second resolution was passed to amend the constitution for everything the body already voted on last year without the Board of Trustees approving new amendments. 

David Koonce, associate dean of the Graduate College, presented to the senate about graduate college enrollment statistics at the beginning of the meeting.

Graduate student enrollment increased at all Ohio University campuses except the Athens campus, Koonce said. The enrollment of doctoral students is also declining across all campuses.

In other business:

  • Graduate Senate discussed professional development programs.

  • The body unanimously voted to approve an issue summary regarding graduate student benefits.
