PHOTOS: Hillel holds candlelight vigil to honor victims of Pittsburgh synagogue shooting

The Ohio U chapter of Hillel organized a candlelight vigil outside of the Hillel house on Mill Street on Monday. More than 100 people mourned the loss of the 11 who were killed during a worship service at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday. 

The vigil, which was organized just one day prior, on Sunday, was part of Hillel's "Stronger Together" initiative, according to event organizers. Music was performed several times during the event.

Some held signs with political messages. At one point during the vigil, event organizer Zach Reizes urged attendees to take their frustration and grief to the polls and passed out early voting information.

Hillel members stood with the names of the 11 victims printed on a piece of paper and read them aloud before a prayer.

Winsome Chunnu, Associate Director of the Multicultural Center, passed candles out to those in attendance.

President Nellis gave prepared remarks, and told attendees that an attack on one religion is an attack on all.

Dr. Gigi Secuban, Ohio University's Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion spoke following President Nellis.

Police stood around the perimeter of the vigil. Mill Street was blocked off in front of the Hillel house to allow for the candlelight vigil to spread into the street.

Vigil attendees helped one another light candles at the end of the event.

The candles burned during prayer and song.
