Performers impress crowds with celebration of International Women's Day

The International Women’s Day Festival took place this Sunday, celebrating Women’s history and empowerment. It welcomed vendors, performances and speeches from many influential members of the community, including Mayor Steve Patterson, who labelled the month of March as International Women’s Month.Bukky Shaba was one of the events hosts. She is a graduate student at Ohio University and an international student.The OU Singers performed a song version of a poem to commemorate the event.The Sisters of Salaam celebrate diversity and women’s excellence through a performance of Middle Eastern dance and music.Megan Wren, singer and songwriter, performed songs from Stevie Nicks, Dixie Chicks and one of her own songs while wearing a tee proclaiming “the future is female.” This t-shirt has become popular among feminists groups after the shirt’s creation for Labyris Books, the first women's bookstore in New York City.The Rev. Jan Griesinger spoke to attendees on many topics, including historical feminists movements such as Susan B. Anthony’s protest for equal wages. “I’ll be a post-feminist in the post-patriarchy,” she said.
