Mayor Patterson announces new director of code enforcement
Rick Sirois will be the new director of code enforcement, Mayor Steve Patterson announced during his Wednesday press conference. The director of code enforcement is responsible for interpreting and enforcing city ordinances relating to health and safety, zoning codes and building regulations. The position was left vacant after Patterson fired John Paszke on Feb. 1.“The position was open and I went for it,” Sirois said during the press conference. Sirois said he has 20 years of military experience that has prepared him to take on this role. He also said he enjoys working with people, which will help him in his new role. “It’ll be challenging,” Sirois said. “I’m looking forward to it.” Trash collection is at the top of Sirois’ list of codes to revise in Athens. “Trash collection is major,” Sirois said. “I want to give time to see what changes. There is always room for change and improvement.” Patterson is confident in Sirois as the director of code enforcement, but the mayor said he is going to give Sirois some time to wrap his head around the uniqueness of Athens codes. Patterson also joined with the Athens County Developmental Disability Board for a proclamation regarding people who are developmentally disabled. “March will from now on be Developmental Disability Month in Athens,” Patterson said, along with members of the ACDD Board. “We want these people to realize their full potential.” Patterson also encouraged people to stay off the roads during fest season to keep the roads as clear as possible for partygoers. “I would not encourage citizens to drive on these streets during fest season,” Patterson said.
