Democrats Peter Kotses and Jennifer Cochran as well as Independent Patrick McGee won city council at-large seats. Councilman Steve Patterson won the race for mayor. The city council members for all four wards (who were running unopposed) kept their seats. All other races were uncontested.Athens also voted on the three state issues. A majority of city voters--73.93 percent--supported Issue 1, which will help end partisan gerrymandering in the state. Athens voters rejected Issue 2, which would prevent economic monopolies in Ohio. Voters also shot down Issue 3, which would have legalized marijuana.UPDATE--9:22 p.m.92.86 percent of the ballots are in. Democrat Peter Kotses still leads the city, with Democrat Jennifer Cochran and Independent Patrick McGee following close behind. Democrat Jennifer Kraynanski and Republican Aaron Dauterman remain in fourth and fifth place, respectively.McGee says he feels good, but is cautious."I've seen a lot of elections go south," McGee said. "I'd hate to declare myself king when I'm not."Dauterman was less happy with results."With 92 percent of the votes in, it doesn't look like we're going to be able to pull any hail marys," Dauterman said.State issues results have finally been released after a mandated delay statewide. 74.22 percent of voters said 'yes' on Issue 1, a measure that would limit gerrymandering in Ohio. 53.71 percent of voters said 'no' on Issue 2, a measure designed to limit monopolies in the state. Fans of Issue 3, marijuana legalization, will be disappointed to learn that 63.83 percent of voters rejected the measure.UPDATE--8:46 p.m.With 37.5 percent of precincts coming in, Democrat Peter Kotses leads the city council at-large race with 26.98 percent of the votes. He is followed by incumbent Democrat Jennifer Cochran (24.62 percent), Independent Patrick McGee (23.08 percent), Democrat Joan Kraynanski (17.2 percent) and Republican Aaron Dauterman (8.12 percent).
