Court report: Athens men sentenced on burglary and drug charges

An Athens, Ohio, man was sentenced Thursday in the Athens County Court of Common Pleas for breaking and entering at 65 E. Main St.Daniel Spears, along with another man, was charged with one count of burglary after being caught in the act. The other man was responsible for actually taking items from the home they were found near.Spears was sentenced to three years in prison with possibility of parole after six months under the condition he testify truthfully at the trial of the co-defendant.Another Athens man was sentenced Thursday for several drug charges acquired between two separate cases.Gregory Sheets was originally arrested on Nov. 8, 2013, after deputies responded to calls of a man possibly in danger of falling into traffic. After arriving, deputies found Sheets in the possession of two foil balls containing heroin and a tablet of oxycodone.Sheets was charged with one count of possession of heroin and one count for aggravated possession of drugs.In a separate incident that took place Aug.11, 2014, Sheets was found in possession of heroin again, with the addition of methylphenidate (Ritalin), Alprazolam (Xanax), Clonazepam (Rivotril) and Diazepam (Valium).Sheets earned an additional count for possession of heroin, three counts for possession of drugs and one count for aggravated possession of drugs.Sheets was sentenced to four years and 11 months in prison combined for all of his offenses. Sheets will be up for parole after serving 180 days.
