GSS confirms vote of no confidence in Student Senate President

Monday’s Graduate Student Senate Meeting resulted in an executive session to confirm a vote of no confidence in Student Senate President Nick Southall.

In a press released mailed to meeting attendees after the executive session, graduate student senate voiced its opposition to Nick Southall’s continued service on that body.

“Graduate Student Senate votes that we have no confidence in President Southall’s ability to represent Student Senate and the Ohio University graduate student body and support all measures to remove him from office,” states a press release that GSS sent out. This Statement was voted on and passed with unanimous consent.

According to Ed Gaither, Vice President for Administration and Finance, the meeting was intentionally content-light to make room for the executive session, but the group also covered the Graduate Student Writing Center, a program meant to be used by students looking for training in graduate-level writing and research.

There were no new resolutions for this meeting.

“There's a big focus on the undergrads,” says Andrea Harless, Vice President of Communications “it's a little different for grad students. We want to foster an environment where grad students love OU as much as undergrads do.”

According to Gaither, “no events have really come up and I've been working on software and computer updates. Plus, so much time was devoted to the executive issue.”

Last week, a formal request for review of Southall’s presidency was filed with the Committee on Conduct and Discipline.
