Athens Salvation Army Raises Funds in Area Stores
As the holiday season jumps into high gear, local organizations like the Salvation Army are doing their part to help those in need.According to salvationarmyusa.org, the organization is:“An International Movement, an evangelical part of the Universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.”Madge Stewart, manager of the Athens and Meigs County Salvation Army branch, identified the areas that the branch provides aid for, which include helping families pay for rent and utility as well as food. The Athens area Salvation Army, Stewart explained, is taking part in an annual Christmas tradition with its Red Kettle campaign. Volunteers stand outside busy places of commerce and ask for donations for those in need. Volunteers attract attention by ringing bells and asking for donations from those who pass by. As evidenced by likely past experience, area residents will likely see such volunteers at nearby grocery stores or Wal-Mart.The Red Kettle campaign brings in millions of dollars nationally to the organization, and is also a fairly lucrative fundraiser for the Athens branch. Stewart estimated that this fundraiser in particular has brought in an estimated $2,000 for the organization. The Salvation Army’s website elaborates even more on where many of these donations and resources will be directed.“Donations provide Christmas dinners, clothing and toys for families in need. Financial assistance also helps with basic necessities, along with seasonal aid. Families of prisoners often are included.”Volunteers distribute gifts to shut-ins in hospitals and nursing homes and shelters are open for sit-down dinners. The Salvation Army works to bring spiritual light and love to those it serves at Christmas so that the real meaning of the season is not forgotten. Many families receive aid over a period of months after the Christmas season as well as people struggling with difficult family, emotional or employment problems. To get involved with the local Salvation Army, you can call the Athens branch at 740-593-3342, or go to www.volunteermatch.org and search with the keyword “Salvation Army.”
